The prestigious accolade reflects the culmination of collective efforts and dedication exhibited by the entire Shah Deniz team. The Shah Deniz project, situated in the Caspian Sea, stands as one of the largest gas and condensate deposits globally, discovered in 1999. Spearheaded by bp, in partnership with Shah Deniz Hasilat Share Zone Agreement (HPBS) partners, the project operates under a structurally non-corporate Joint Venture (JV) partnership model.
Since its inception, Shah Deniz has been synonymous with excellence and operational prowess. Commencing operations in 2006 with Phase 1, the project has consistently demonstrated its capacity to deliver, with a maximum production capability of approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year and 50,000 barrels of condensate per day.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2021, the Shah Deniz project marks a significant milestone in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas industry. The signing of the HPBS agreement in 1996 paved the way for transformative developments, heralding a new era of prosperity and progress in the region. Over the years, the project has continued to evolve, with substantial investments in operational and capital expenditures, notably driven by the Shah Deniz 2 project.
In 2023 alone, the project incurred operating expenses exceeding $2 billion and capital expenditures of around $892 million, primarily directed towards advancing its operational capabilities. Despite the challenges posed by the global energy landscape, Shah Deniz remained steadfast in its commitment to supplying gas to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Europe, ensuring a reliable and sustainable source of energy for diverse markets.
The year 2023 witnessed the extraction of approximately 26 billion standard cubic meters of gas and over 4 million tons of condensate from the Shah Deniz field, underscoring its significance as a major contributor to the region’s energy security. With the existing facilities boasting a production capacity of about 28 billion standard cubic meters per day, Shah Deniz continues to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing energy demands of a dynamic and evolving market.
