The fate of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has long been uncertain. Initially, it was announced that the model would be discontinued entirely, followed by reports that its production would be extended for a few more years. Now, it appears the A-Class will continue with a successor.

According to Car.news, Mercedes-Benz has abandoned its plan to completely remove its most affordable model from the lineup. In its 2023 strategy, the company intended to reduce the number of “Entry Luxury” models from seven to four, but the successor to the A-Class will now be added to this list.

The new-generation vehicle will be built on the brand’s MMA platform and offered with both petrol and electric powertrains. While it is still unclear whether it will retain the same name, the A-Class badge carries strong brand equity, having been in use since 1996.

The new model is expected to debut in 2028, following the end of production of the current A-Class. Dimensionally, it will reportedly be very close to the next-generation GLA, raising the possibility of a strong visual resemblance between the two.

Mercedes-Benz has shifted its focus in recent years to high-end segments – including Maybach models – in pursuit of higher margins. However, consistently strong sales of the A-Class in Europe have pushed the company to revisit its earlier plans.
