Hyundai is stepping into the body-on-frame ute market, confirming plans for a mid-size truck to rival the Ford Ranger. Revealed at the company’s 2025 Investor Day, CEO José Muñoz said a new pickup will arrive in North America by 2030, with an SUV derivative also being considered, according to car.news.
A second truck, co-developed with General Motors for Latin America, is also in the works and could retain diesel power, unlike the North American ute which is expected to focus on hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.
Australia is a key market under review, though Hyundai hasn’t confirmed which version will land locally. Hyundai Australia boss Don Romano has already ruled out diesel, pointing instead to hybrid, PHEV or EV options. The local ute could still hit showrooms by 2029, though trade conditions may cause delays, according to car.news.
Alongside pickups, Hyundai will also introduce a full-size SUV in the US, aimed squarely at the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Ford Expedition. The strategy signals Hyundai’s push into high-margin SUV and ute segments worldwide.
